Juvederm and Restylane Post Treatment Instructions

Swelling and Bruising
Immediately after the dermal filler procedure, the most common reported side effect is redness and swelling at the site of the treatment. This redness and swelling is temporary. Bruising is also a common side effect. Certain medications, OTC analgesics, and herbal remedies can thin the blood which may cause more bruising.

Patient are instructed to avoid these medications that thin bloods for 5 -67 days after the procedure.

Cold compresses applied after the treatment to the injection sites will help decrease bruising and swelling. The cold compress can be in the form of gel packs, frozen peas, or even sandwich bags filled with ice.

If your bruising is more significant then we recommend a follow up with your aesthetic health professional.

Manipulation of the Area After Procedure
Patients are often tempted to touch and manipulate the treated area. This can cause problems for several reasons. First, the area may still be numb and patients may not realize the strength of the manipulation. Second, excessive manipulation can cause more swelling and more bruising. Finally, excessive manipulation may cause the product to migrate to unintended areas.

The day after the procedure, patients can touch and massage the area gently. If the patient begins to notice early nodule formation of the accumulation of product, then they can gently massage the area. Patient should call in to the their health professional if any concerns.

Follow-Up
Immediate and routine follow up after the dermal filler treatment is not necessary. However, patients that are more anxious and concerned about the outcome are recommended to schedule a routine follow-up. The follow-up appointment should be scheduled at least 7 days out. This will allow enough time to some bruising and swelling to be minimized.

A follow-up and touch-up appointment should be scheduled at the 4-6 month mark. Patient will notice at at the time that the filler may start to decrease. Therefore, we recommend that additional filler be injected.

There should little or no pain following injection of hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane and Juvederm. Heavier fillers, like Lyft and Voluma can cause more swelling, so patients should not schedule critical events right after getting filler.

One of the great things about a filler is that it is not necessarily meant for older patients. If you are young, then a filler can help add volume to the cheek area and also to the lip area. This addition will give more shape and symmetry to your face.

Does it just fill wrinkles?

No. Juvederm can be used to fill wrinkles its are so much more. Juvederm and many others fillers can be used to plump up lips, add volume to cheeks , and even fill in acne scars.

Can I use Juvederm on my lips?

Using Juvederm to add more volume to lips is very popular. However, it is important to keep a few things in mind. First, you do not want to over do your lips because you will end up “sausage lips” or “trout mouth.” It is extremely important that fillers add just subtle voluma that will give you a sexy look.

How long before I see the results?

Results for a Juvederm treatment are immediate. However, the final results will be seen about 1-2 weeks after the injection. We need to let the swelling go down and let the filler settle in to get a better view of the final results.

Is there bruising?

Bruising may or may not happen. We are after all, piercing the skin with the needle. We always recommend patients to stop taking any aspirin or ibuprofen because this may cause your body to bruise more easily.

Remember, we can take precautions, but we cannot guarantee that you will not bruise.

How does it feel after? Will I feel lumps?

Lumps may sometimes be felt immediately afterwards. Especially if you feel very closely. These will either be massaged by your medical provider if needed or will settle in after 2 weeks. We always recommend our patients to ask as many questions if they are unsure.

How long do the results last?

Juvederm is temporary and may last up to one year with optimal treatment. Therefore, touch-up injections, as well as repeat injections, are usually needed to maintain optimal results. Less material (about half the amount) is usually needed for repeat injections.

Ultimately, the length of the results can vary from patients to patients and can also depend on which area it was injected into. At Peach we have seen patients that see results up to a year but we have also seen patients that see results up to only 6 months.
