Is there such a thing as preventative Botox

Is there such a thing as preventative Botox?

In the early 2000’s, companies such as Allergan (the makers of BOTOX and JUVEDERM) and Galderma (the makers of Dysport and Lyft), were marketing their aesthetic injectibles to women in ages ranging from 30 to late 60’s. Now, we see these companies and aesthetic practices marketing to women in their early 20’s and 30’s through the use of social media – primarily Instagram™.

Why the change? Could it actually be preventative for women in their 20’s and 30’s?

The simple answer is YES.

First, let’s begin by understanding how and why fine lines, wrinkles and laxity occur.

  1. Fine lines and wrinkles are the result of constant muscle contraction. The skin lying on top of those muscles constantly creases and moves when the muscles contract and over time, those lines become static. Think of a piece of paper, the more you fold it, the more permanent and fragile the creases become.
  2. The loss in skin laxity and simple gravity can cause loss of volume that can be attributed to fluctuating weight – similarly to our body’s skin when their is fluctuating weight, the skin of the face begins to lose its firmness and “sag”, causing the tired, volumeless appearance in the jowls, lips, and even under eyes.

So, why is Botox being called a “preventative treatment”?

Simply put, when you can completely stop or slow down the constant muscle contractions, the skin is creased less often resulting in fewer lines over time.

What’s the difference in a “preventive treatment” and a non-preventative treatment of Botox?

The number of units used will vary based on the amount of movement in the area ie. how strong your muscles are. The treatment will have the same effects on the muscles, but the skin is what’s being spared. Think about the difference not having severe creasing would make on the skin between the eyebrows, forehead and crow’s feet!

Will the results look natural?

Providers often will use multiple products depending on your unique needs and wants. Botox is often used to relax the dominant frown muscles between the eyebrows, forehead’s horizontal lines, lines around the eyes and nose as well. The results are not used to paralyze the muscles, but rather to relax them to obtain a natural and refreshed look.

Will my face still have expression?

When administered by an experienced physician, you can still smile, frown and look surprised without those lines.
